The beginnings of the type writer
The first type writer was called The Sholes & Glidden Type Writer. It was produced by gun makers in New York in the years 1874-1878. It was not very successful. Less than 5000 typewriters were sold. In the year 1868 Christopher Sholes got an idea at Kleinsteuber's Machine Shop in Milwaukee. Sholes was a publisher, politician, and philosopher. Sholes wanted to be part of the age of invention. Originally the type writer was made to number the pages in books. One of his colleagues had an idea that they should make the typewriter to be able to print the alphabet.
Type Writers in the 1900
Within the first 10 years of the 20th century the standards for the typewriter changed from the upstrike to the front strike type writer. With a front strike type writer the typist could see what she wrote because the typewriter would print on the front of the platen. A platen is the palte that presses the paper agenst the keys. The Underwood was the most popular front strike typewriter. In the year 1900 the U.S. Navy Department had bought 250 of them. About 4 million Underwoods were from 1901 to 1931. In the 1960's manual and electric typewriters were popular in the office until IBM released the IBM Selectric. The IBM Selectric could type in different fonts and languages.
The keyboard
The first keyboard was introduced in the 1930's when the typewriter was combined with punch cards. This was called the adding machine. IBM was selling over 1 million dollars worth of adding machines. In 1946, the Eniac Computer used a punched card reader as its input and output device.
